— Imani P.

“Vanilla Sandalwood melts right in and brings my skin back to life. I’ve stopped using traditional lotion completely — this is the only thing that keeps me smooth through Ohio winters.”
— Lauren K.

From a Daughter's Love to Campus Movement

Coarse Culture began with love — a daughter inspired by her mother’s strength and driven to create comfort through care. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Founder VaLanDria Smith-Lash started the brand after her mother was diagnosed with lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease that left her hair and skin brittle and irritated. After researching natural remedies and consulting doctors, VaLanDria created her own solution: a whipped shea butter made with all-natural ingredients that soothed her mother’s sensitivities. What began as a heartfelt gesture has evolved into a growing brand empowering students through hands-on entrepreneurship. Today, every jar is made with care inside Miami University’s College@Elm Innovation Center, where Coarse Culture continues to blend self-care, community, and education.

Real People. Real Results.

“I burned my arm cooking one night and reached for my Coarse Culture shea butter while it healed. I was shocked at how quickly it soothed the irritation and dryness — and now, you can barely see the mark. I’ll never be without it again.”
— Kendra P., Cincinnati, OH
